Americans mourn loss of Harambe

On May 28 2016, at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Harambe, a Western Iowland gorilla and the face of countless memes that continue to swarm the Internet, was shot by a zoo worker.

A three-year-old boy climbed into the gorilla’s compound and the gorilla grabbed and dragged the child, causing panic among the zoo workers for the child’s life.

This incident, captured on video by someone at the zoo generated controversy as people argued that the gorilla was not going to harm the child. Harambe was soon found in every corner of the Internet as the memes, “Remembering private Harambe” and “Bush Did Harambe” and many more became viral. As referred to by The Guardian, Harambe is “the meme that refused to die”.

“Laramie Project” deemed success

In early May, New Trier presented the “Laramie Project,” a groundbreaking play about the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, an openly gay boy living in Laramie, Wyoming.  It highlighted the well known piece of American history.

The play is based on 200 interviews conducted with the people in his town, court documents, and news reports.  It also includes “issues of social justice, homophobia, and civic responsibility,” according to Media, Speech and Theatre Department Chair Nina Lynn.
