Wellness Week to kick off with Run to Remember

Wellness Week, beginning Sunday April 14, is a six day event promoting everything Kinetic Wellness stands for. From the nurse’s office to the library, from Hip Hop to Hula Hooping, the week is jam packed with all kinds of health related activities taking place at both the Northfield and Winnetka campus. The cafeteria will also be playing a part in the week by launching “Under 500 Calorie” meals for the week. New Trier students will be issued a “passport” to keep track of all the events they participate in throughout the week.
A running activity kicks off the week. According to NT’s website, “Beginning in 2001, the New Trier Wellness Week featured a 5K Rundezvous focusing on health and wellness for the community and the school. Then, 2003 through 2012 the Rundezvous became the Run to Remember in memory of the three New Trier graduates who perished in the Chicago porch collapse”.
The website continues, “Now, in 2013, we are again kicking off our Wellness Week with the 5K run. This year, we will continue to remember the memory of the three New Trier grads, but we will also be honoring Principal Jan Borja who passed away last year after a long illness. Jan was an avid supporter and participant of this event from its inception in 2001. All proceeds from the fun run/walk will go to the scholarship funds and charities in memory of Jan and the graduates”.
To pre-register for the Run to Remember you can register online, in-person, or through mail. Pre-registering will result in both a Run to Remember T-shirt and the opportunity to run a 5K for a great cause. The event will take place Sunday, Apr. 14 starting at 8am.
Maureen Maher, Northfield campus faculty member and member of the WW team is a proud supporter of the 6-day event.
“WW is basically a week-long celebration of health and wellness. The KW Department is organizing the event; however, several different areas of the school are participating: from the cafeteria to the library to the nurse’s office. Each day, all week, during any given period, there will be different activity options for staff and students to take part in when they are free.
There will be contests (hula hoop, bench press, 3 point shoot-out, home run derby), meditation and relaxation sessions, dance classes, and yoga – just to name a few.
Zumba, a popular new way to exercise through dance fusion, will also take place during wellness week on Monday, Apr. 15.
All New Trier students are encouraged to get involved with Wellness Week during free periods.
The week comes to a close Friday Apr. 19, with the popular TriShip Steak Sale at the Winnetka campus during all lunch periods.
