THIS IS HAPPENING

For the first time in 71 years, the Cubs are going to the World Series. The Cubs clinched the National League pennant on Oct. 23 in six games against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cubs shut out the Dodgers 5-0 in a thrilling game starting with a strong first inning. Dexter Fowler, CF, started the inning with a ground rule double. Then thrid baseman Kris Bryant hit a single driving in Fowler. Anthony Rizzo, the first baseman, followed Bryant with a high fly ball that was dropped by the Dodgers left fielder advancing both runners. Bryant then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Ben Zobrist. The Cubs scored two runs in the first inning on the Dodger’s famed pitcher Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw, a four time Cy Young winner, was not in his usual form Saturday and was taken out after the fifth inning.

However, Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks was in top form and exited in the top of the 7th inning. Hendricks is a candidate for this years NL Cy Young award and boasted the leagues lowest ERA this year.

Soon after the final out on a double play ball hit to Addison Russell from pinch hitter Yasiel Puig, chaos ensued. Fans jumped up in their seats, raised their W flags and screamed along to the anthem, “Go Cubs Go”. Outside the stadium, fireworks exploded, fans climbed onto traffic lights, and tears of joy flowed.    Police presence was massive, but for the most part police did not intervene on the celebrations, even giving out high fives to many fans. People who were unable to attend the game listened to the sweet words of Joe Buck exclaiming “The Cubs have w  on the pennant.”

The celebration did not stop on Saturday night. Since the games, the north side of Chicago has been in a state of excitment. Even, President Obama, a White Sox fan, congraduated the Cubs for the historic, surreal win.

After 71 years since a World Series appearance, the North Side of Chicago, and now the world, has something to celebrate: the Chicago Cubs are going to the World Series!
