The editors-in-chief, faculty adviser (Sarah Hands), and assistant faculty adviser (Kristan Kenney) will interpret and enforce this policy.
Editorial Policy
The New Trier News is the independent, student-run publication of New Trier High School.
Role of Students:
The editorial board of the New Trier News is composed of students only. With the help of our advisers, student editors make decisions on what content is created, published, and shared throughout the school. The opinions expressed by one editor do not reflect the opinions of the entire editorial staff, nor do they reflect the opinions of the administration.
Role of Faculty Advisers:
The advisers of the New Trier News do not project their opinions or biases on any of the content that the staff produces. Their main role is procedural, and advising the staff on certain matters of the writing and editing process. The primary adviser is also responsible for teaching the school’s Advanced Journalism class, fostering the next generation of New Trier student journalists.
Statement of legal rights and responsibilities:
As a designated public forum, the New Trier News is protected under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and the (105 ILCS 80/) Speech Rights of Student Journalists Act. Under these legal rights, the newspaper publication has the right to exercise free speech and publish whatever is deemed relevant and appropriate.
Staff Editorials:
When the New Trier News publishes a staff editorial, the topics are discussed by the New Trier News editorial board, which consists of all student editors on the year’s masthead. The staff editorials may be written by one or two student editors, but the entire editorial staff will review the staff editorial for approval before it is published unsigned. Opinions set forth in the staff editorial represent the official opinions of the New Trier News editorial staff. In the event that the editorial staff is divided on a particular issue, the staff editorial will be written from the perspective held by the majority of the editorial staff, with the consent of the minority.
The views expressed in staff editorial reflect only the views of the student editorial staff and do not represent the views of the faculty advisers, any school officials, the school itself, or the district.
