On Oct. 31, the New Trier High School Student Council hosted its annual Halloween event, “The Spooky Scrounge,” during lunch periods. Students in attendance played games and ate candy and other food.
Student Council and other clubs who signed up participated in the Spooky Scrounge, each having their own table to give out food or host an activity. Walking through the Spooky Scrounge that chilling afternoon, I enjoyed interacting with the fun activities and seeing every club’s unique table.
But, for those who missed the Spooky Scrounge, want to relive the fun memories, or simply need entertainment, please look through this photo essay.
Welcome to the Spooky Scrounge.
There was quite a welcoming crew at the entrance: a dragon and Indiana Bones. The dragon was cute but spooky to me because of its teeth. Looking at it now, I think it‘s somehow funny.
Indiana Bones scared me a little bit because of its eyes; I don’t think skeletons are supposed to have eyes.
When I first arrived on the ground floor during 2B, the first things I noticed about the Spooky Scrounge were the darkness that lay inside and the blasting music. What else lay inside? I went in to find out. When I got inside the Spooky Scrounge, I was greeted with a masterpiece of color, intricately placed decorations, and, most importantly, spookiness. Everything from the hanging cloth and ghosts, to the pumpkins on the walls blended so well together. The decorating skills of Student Council and the other clubs are wonderful.
The first table I visited was run by Jewelry Club, with members hosting Halloween trivia.
Their trivia fit the event’s Halloween theme as I picked out a piece of paper from the bowl that asked me about the weight of the largest pumpkin in the world. I guessed, B, 2,749 lbs, and was correct! As a prize they let me have a glow stick which I hung around my neck as I continued to check out the other tables and activities in the Scrounge.
It was cool how Spanish Club brought Spanish Culture into their trivia activity by having Dia de los Muertos-related questions which were super relevant because the holiday is Friday and Saturday. Also, they offered Spanish candy to trivia winners, and it was a nice way to celebrate Spanish culture during the Spooky Scrounge.
I thought the selling of sweets and thank you notes at the Leaders 4 Change Club’s table was great. Like Spanish Club, Leaders 4 Change Club brought their club’s values—gratitude—to the use and design of their table.
The sinister expression on the skeleton’s face was definitely spooky!
This game looked fun, but, at that moment, I was determined to continue exploring all the bewitching parts of the Spooky Scrounge. The skeleton was a mood though.
When I walked past the pumpkin bozo bucket game, I immediately saw the Girls Club cotton candy table. The people at the table gave me a free piece of cotton candy. It was so delicious! I hadn’t had cotton candy in a while and it was a nice reminder of cotton candy’s sweet, sugary taste.
As the period was almost over, my sister and I decided to take a photo in the free photo booth to remember the Spooky Scrounge.
Reflecting upon it now, I’d say I had a good time. I made nothing but good memories. I can’t wait to see what scary, magical plans the Spooky Scrounge has in store for next year!
