WNTH, located at 88.1 FM on the radio dial, is New Trier’s own homegrown station. As the new school year begins, the station is coming out with many new and notable advances in their broadcasting.
WNTH broadcasts from seven in the morning to ten at night every day except Saturday. Coming right from New Trier, the program is almost entirely student run. Students make the schedule, do the broadcasting, and select the music.
This year, one of the new advances with WNTH is the broader sports broadcasting. “We try to find a balance of sports,” Mr. Rubin says, the sponsor for the program. This balance of sports includes both boys and girls athletics, and at least one game every week or two.
There is also increased access to music this year. The music library has been expanded to allow access to music from Spotify, a music listening service. In addition, the Student Technology Leadership Team (STiLT) is developing an app that will allow iPads and smartphones to have “direct access” as Rubin says to the radio broadcasting.
Students in WNTH are working to accomplish more this year. “We try to strive for more professional and diverse radio shows,” Rubin says. They also look forward to diversity from mainstream radio. There is such variety on WNTH because the students who run it hope that anyone can have a reason to tune in.
As WNTH radio moves forward this year, Rubin notes there are certain events to look out for. One is the Radio-Thon Fundraiser next semester, which is a 15 hour broadcasting event that has been hosted by WNTH since 2005.
During the Radio-Thon, various guests come into the station, and others can call in to participate. In the past, WNTH has hosted celebrities such as “Arrested Development” actor Michael Cera, “The Office” actor Rainn Wilson, “Parks and Recreation” actor Aziz Ansari, and even Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel for the Radio-Thon.
There are also several new radio shows in the WNTH program to listen to this year.
These radio shows cover a variety of subjects, mostly music centered, but also include subjects like politics and sports. There’s so many shows to pick from: “Twin Talk” on Friday mornings, “The Nonchalant Croissant” on Tuesday mornings, “Night Talk” on Thursday evenings, “UN Sound” after school on Fridays, and so many more.
“It’s awesome how much variety the station has. There’s something for everyone to tune in and listen to on WNTH,” said Tatiana Perez, a junior hosting an alternative station called “Monkey Bizniz” on WNTH. Becca Winer, the station manager, seems to feel the same, “We have really unique shows this year. A lot of people are thinking outside of the box.”
“What’s really cool about WNTH is that it’s all student run,” Rubin says. Students manage almost all aspects of the station, just another aspect adding to how unique WNTH is from mainstream radio.
