On Oct. 18, ABC7 Chicago announced that New Trier High School won the award for the best Friday Flyover formation, beating Lane Tech High School, Southland College Prep, Merrillville High School, and Nazareth Academy. The Trevians won due to votes from viewers who said that New Trier’s flyover was the best.
During Friday Flyovers, ABC7 films aerial view recordings of Chicagoland high school students and staff in a formation of their choice as the beginning of a feature which highlights clubs, athletics, and academics at the schools. New Trier won the award for the best formation of the year for the Sept. 13 broadcast where students were arranged into an “NT” on the north field at the Winnetka Campus.
While the “NT” itself was impressive, Student Activities Coordinator Stacy Kolack attributed the success of the flyover to “the size of our community and enthusiasm of people for our school. Not just the flyover was good, but [the depiction of] all of the parts of our school.”
Members of organizations such as Student Council and sports teams such as the girls soccer team and flag football team were involved in forming the “NT” and filmed for various parts of the broadcast. The students involved had to wake up and be at school as early as 4 a.m. to help set up and prepare.
Junior Ellie Weir, a member of Student Council, was grateful for the experience of being involved in the flyover and felt all of the school spirit when it was filmed and after New Trier won.
“I was really happy when we won because so many people put lots of work into planning the event,” Weir said. “We woke up really early to make it happen, so I really felt like we earned it.”
Even though winning the trophy was exciting for students and faculty, the overall experience of the flyover was about more than just an award.
“It was a really positive way to start off the school year. Our students are so articulate and represent our school in such an amazing way,” Kolack said. “It felt like a great showcase of what New Trier has to offer.”
