On Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025, Oberweis Dairy (Oberweis) opened a new location on 510 Winnetka Avenue—right down the street from the Winnetka Campus where the Shabahang Royal Carpet store used to be. This Oberweis location is more modern than its other locations in Glenview and Skokie, though it still includes a red awning outside, an ice cream parlor, and a dairy shop on the inside like the other locations.
While Oberweis used to be owned by the Oberweis family, the store was recently bought by the Hoffmann Family Companies, a private equity firm owned by a North Shore family, on Jun. 19, 2024 after Oberweis Dairy filed for bankruptcy on Apr. 12, 2024.
While the Winnetka location is new, it already has mixed reviews. Customers have taken to leaving reviews online, with some being unhappy with the new ownership, and others loving the new store.
“You do NOT want to come here,” Jake Carr, who gave the new Oberweis Dairy location a one-star review on their Google Maps location online, wrote. “Oberweis in the hands of private equity is a sham. I got the wrong flavors, price gouged, and insulted by an employee. Terrible experience.”
While others online share Carr’s sentiment and dislike the new ownership and store-quality, some have enjoyed the new store.
“The staff was really nice,” junior Rowan Giller said. “After I got my order, someone came up to me and asked if I already got my order, so top service.”
Junior Annabel Kim also had a positive experience with the new Oberweis.
“I liked the store,” Kim said “There was a Winnetka inspired flavor which was cool. I tried the chocolate peanut butter in a cone, but I think my favorite is the banana chocolate.”
Unlike the other locations, the Winnetka Wildberry is a berry-flavored ice cream with a purple color that is only found at the Oberweis Winnetka location.
The new Oberweis has a newer style, with its light brown polished floors, menu screens above the ice cream display, and new red sign that says “Oberweis” on the outside of the store. Additionally, each white table at the location has a painted chess board for customers who want to eat ice cream and play a game.
“Ice cream was so good per usual, my boys loved playing chess & we brought home their delicious milk,” Liz Galvin, a five star reviewer, wrote. “It was clean, new and people were always walking about tidying up. Loved it, will be back!”
Besides its new Winnetka Wildberry flavor, Oberweis still features flavors found at its other locations such as the Banana-licious Choc Chunk Ice Cream.
“It doesn’t taste like a real banana, but it isn’t in-your-face artificial,” Giller said when talking about the Banana-licious Choc Chunk Ice Cream. “It’s a nice balance.”
Since Oberweis is close to New Trier High School’s Winnetka Campus, students have the opportunity to get an ice cream more often.
“I probably see myself going to this Oberweis during a free period or after school,” Kim said.
In the future, the Hoffmann Family Companies plans to open more locations.
“Oberweis is also opening new stores with official opening dates to be announced soon,” the company wrote on Oberweis’s official Instagram.
