With the publication of the Lollapalooza lineup there have been many mixed reactions across the school. The main stars of the famous Chicago-based festival include everything from contemporary names such as Dua Lipa and Machine Gun Kelly, to older acts like Green Day and Metallica. But this leaves many music fans confused.

“Out of the big names on top, Green Day did surprise me because it is an older band. Like, really?” Carly Palmer said. “Because it is such a big event, I feel like they should have had people that were more well known.” 

Many sophomores were expecting to see more well-known artists. They were very disappointed by the lack of bigger, more relevant names in the lineup. Another sophomore said, “I don’t have negative opinions of people performing because I just don’t know any of these people.” 

This raises the question: If Metallica and Green Day aren’t cutting it, then who do teens want to see? 

“Surprised Billie Eilish isn’t there, Lil Nas X should’ve been there, and a little surprised Olivia Rodrigo isn’t performing either,” Avery Sturm added.

Billie Elish has been on the rise for years and never fails to draw in big crowds when she has concerts. But instead of Lollapalooza, she has decided to take to the stage at Coachella.

Coachella is another major music festival held about two months before Lollapalooza in California. If sophomore fans of Billie Eilish want to go see her, then a plane ride is needed.

As for Olivia Rodrigo, she is on tour for her debut album Sour, and will be too busy with her own concert schedule to make an appearance.

But not everything is doom and gloom because there are a few names that are catching attention. “I would go solely for Dua Lipa because I love her,” Avery Sturm said. “But I would go for her only.” Another sophomore chimed in saying that she wished that she could see Doja Cat, another big headliner, along with Dua Lipa.

Doja Cat is scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza. However, recent controversy around Doja Cat leaves the status of her future concerts in question. 

The hype for Lollapalooza is not as big as it has been in the past. But there is still hope in the big names and hardcore fans that they will bring in. The festival will go on for four days from July 28–July 31 in downtown Chicago.
