Democracy is an important part of this country. An example of our democracy is our election system. Everyone gets a fair say in who they’d like to represent them, which is a luxury that not every country is able to enjoy.

By brainwashing millions of people and trying to sabotage the election on January 6, 2021, Donald Trump was actively threatening our democracy and the core values that America is built on.  Trump is a parallel to Khattam-Shud, the antagonist in Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salmon Rushdie.  After the 2020 election, Trump muddied the story waters with false claims of election fraud. In Rushdie’s book, Khattam-Shud says “The world, however, is not for Fun… The world is for Controlling.” And that’s exactly what he did. He controlled and brainwashed millions of people into believing the stories from the muddied waters. He had so much control over his supporters that they were willing to put their lives on the line for him, even if it meant leaving their families behind. Similarly, Donald Trump controlled and muddied the story waters so much, that he was capable of turning Americans against America.
