Chiefs continue their dominance
February 13, 2023
The Chiefs have won their second Super Bowl in 4 years. Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to sneak past the Philadelphia eagles 38-35 in an instant classic. The Chiefs were feeling the heat going into halftime down 14-24 thanks to unbelievable play by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. To make matters worse, Mahomes appeared to have reinjured his banged-up ankle and limped off the field at halftime. Mahomes and company came back firing with 3 straight touchdown drives in the second half. Early in the 4th quarter, the Chiefs were leading 27-35 but Hurts and his offense put together a touchdown drive spanning just over 4 minutes. This ended with a successful 2-point conversion sneak by Hurts to tie the game 35-35. The red hot Chiefs offense took the field late in the fourth and put together a masterpiece of a game- winning drive. The Chiefs got into the Phildaphia red zone quickly thanks to a 26-yard Mahomes scramble. That set up a game-winning Harrison Butker field goal with 8 seconds left to put the Chiefs up 38-35.
In a historic Super Bowl which marked the first matchup where both starting QB’s were black, they were both phenomenal. Hurts, who arguably was the better QB in that game, illustrated his talent both in the running and passing game and showed he will be back again. Meanwhile, Mahomes continued to add to his historic resume becoming the 4th to win 2x MVP and 2x super bowl. While it took Tom Brady, Joe Montana, and Peyton Manning each 10 years or more, it took Mahomes only 6 years.
Mahomes and the Chiefs exceeded expectations as some had questions sparked after losing their star WR Tyreek Hill last offseason. Tight end Travis Kelce stepped up this season and broke former patriot great Rob Gronkowski’s playoff TD record for a tight end. The glue of this team was of course Head coach Andy Reid, who won his 3rd Super Bowl in his career. While the Eagles came into Sunday night favored and at most positions the deeper and more skilled team, the Chiefs, led by a fantastic offensive line and Mahomes, who had an impressive 2nd half, came out victorious.
The dynasty continues to build in Kansas City as the Eagles will go back to the drawing board. The 2023 season starts today as an offseason – with interesting stories like the next chapter of Aaron Rodgers’s career continues to build.
We quickly turn the page as NFL fans begin to wonder what off-season moves their team will make. While the year changes, one thing stays the same: Mahomes and the Chiefs remain on top of the NFL.
