Although I label myself as a pro-choice, pro-rights democrat who thinks Obama is awesome, there’s one little problem, and that’s just it; Obama, in my eyes, and those of many is awesome. Yeah fist bumps, the Circle of Life, shooting hoops, getting burgers with your home dog from the White House, and someone finally putting Donald Trump in his place is pretty cool…if you were a celebrity. However someone who is running a nation of 311 million people shouldn’t have provocative campaign ads.
Now before you rip this page in half and storm down to the News Room to tell me how I’m a sad 80-year old cat lady trapped in a 17-year olds body, I will have you know that I didn’t just wake up and decide to write an article about how Obama is “too cool.” I too can take a joke.
When the Obama campaign released their YouTube video called “Your First Time”, the last thing that popped into my head is voting. Maybe I just have a dirty mind, but when the video throws in quotes like “your ‘first time’ should be with ‘a guy who cares whether you get health insurance and specifically whether you get birth control,’” I just couldn’t help but feel a little uncomfortable…just a little.
Even though the video did focus on the key points of Obama’s four-year plan, and I am perfectly aware that Obama isn’t trying to seduce me as well as the other millions of women in America, I’m gonna have to side with the conservatives this time. Because yes, there is a line, and this video stepped over it.
I greatly admire the presence that Obama has when he steps up to the podium. It is comfortable, laid back, and you feel as if he is talking to you like a good friend in a suit, rather than a president. That is something that I can’t really say for Romney, because whenever he starts to talk about the binders full of women he has, I get the heebie jeebies.
That being said, it is important that the president of the most powerful nation in the world isn’t all fun and games. There are times when it’s appropriate to joke around, but there is a presence of respect and class that every president has to keep up, regardless of the circumstances. This outlook may be traditional and may “restrain” American values of self-expression, but I do believe that our president shouldn’t be making the same sexual innuendos that my friends and I made back in sixth grade.
I don’t think any president of any country has ever been elected for being super duper cool. And if that happens then I’m gonna have to move to Canada.
I have seen countless posts on Tumblr and Facebook about how much “swag” Obama has or how “gangster” he is, rather than how good his points are. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember having to answer how much swag is required to be president on my seventh grade constitution test. And if being a gangster is what it takes to be president, then Romney needs to start giving out snap-backs instead of “vote for me” pins.
Overall, your campaign videos shouldn’t be one giant “that’s what she said.” Unless you’re Bill Clinton.
Don’t waste your first time
