In the previous issue of The New Trier News, we, the newspaper staff, addressed the issue of student graduation attire. In our editorial, we described the NT administration—specifically, Principal Denise Hibbard—as standard-bearers of a tradition we condemned as “sexist” and “unsafe.” We also wrote that “the administration values tradition over making sure students feel secure and comfortable.” The News would like to apologize for this short-sighted, erroneous description. Culture and traditions are deeply engrained facets of any school, and the entire community—students, faculty, parents, alumni— is responsible for their continuance, not one or two administrators. Finally, The News extends an apology to Principal Hibbard, whose comments were taken out of context and ascribed an unintended significance.
