Reviving school spirit with school marching band
This musical addition would add enthusiasm to sporting events and rallies
In the late ‘70s, New Trier phased out its marching band. Due to sensitivity to the Vietnam War, New Trier was inclined to remove anything military-like from the school environment. Considering a marching band closely resembles a group of soldiers wearing uniforms and following a marching routine, the marching band was chosen to go.
While the decision was appropriate in the 1970s, America is no longer at war, and bringing back the marching band would increase school spirit and provide students with additional musical opportunities.
The primary reason for removal is no longer applicable which gives the school no reason to continue the ban.
Currently, it’s in question whether a marching band is necessary since New Trier already has many music programs. There is concern that there will be a lack of time and interested students.
New Trier’s jazz, concert band, and orchestra programs have practices during the school day. School staff fears that adding a marching band would be meaningless considering music students would already be preoccupied during practice hours.
A marching band would require a minimum of about 15 students. With a student body over 4,000, there is no doubt that the music department could recruit members. This group could be completely separate from other music programs such as jazz, therefore avoiding any scheduling conflicts during the school day.
The New Trier Pep Band, in many ways, fulfills the role of a marching band. Members of the community argue a marching band would be a meaningless addition to the school. If there are already band students performing at school events, why throw in another?
In settings such as a football game or an outdoor pep rally, bleachers are filled with hundreds of people. Adding another group of music students to the field would only raise the energy. With unique uniforms, movement, and music, the marching band would be a fun contrast to the pep band that stands stationary within the students.
Additionally, New Trier’s music teachers and programs are already outstanding, so introducing another style of music would be good for students to hear.
New Trier is a school filled with a multitude of opportunities, and a marching band would be appreciable for students wanting to develop their skills and showcase their musical talents.
