After a streaky season and with high hopes for a state championship, the New Trier varsity baseball team suffered a shocking 8-7 defeat to the Oak Park-River Forest Huskies.
The team advanced to sectionals on May 26, after senior Chris Hall’s controversial 2-run home run soared over the foul pole and was called fair, giving the Trevians a 2-1 victory over Loyola. After their first sectional match against the Huskies was rained out on May 31, the team was shut out of a chance at supersectionals and a state championship the next day when the Huskies unexpectedly came back from a seven-run deficit at the top of the fourth inning to pull ahead of the Trevians.
The team’s performance has been largely erratic this season, with a five-game winning streak immediately followed by a disappointing three-game losing streak. However, going into the state tournament the team played better, winning a total of eight straight games in three weeks.
“We recovered quite nicely towards the end,” said head coach Mike Napoleon before their last game on Friday.
This season also commemorated Napoleon’s 700th game with a 2-1 victory over Loyola. He has led the team for 26 seasons and two state championships in 2000 and 2009.
For now, the team is winding down from the end of their season and returning players are looking forward to the start of the new season next Spring.
