The 9-5 loss to the Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers in the quarterfinals of the state tournament was a disappointing end to a disappointing season for the boys lacrosse team (12-12). This early tournament loss ends the run of seven straight state championships.
The Tigers led 8-2 with 9 minutes, left, matching their biggest lead of the game. A goal by senior Jack O’Malley cut the lead to 5 but the Tigers scored again to regain the 6 goal lead. Then with 4:56 remaining, O’Malley scored again, sparking a comeback that fell short. They then got the ball back immediately and scored with 3:56 remaining. That was the extent of the comeback though.
The Tigers kept the Trevians scoreless after one quarter and had a 4-1 haftime lead. Coach Tom Herrala told CSL Insider, “It’s definitely frustrating so hopefully we have something to work on. We’re not just going to win a state championship because it says New Trier on our jersey. We need to get in the weight room, work on our lacrosse skills and mentality all summer and then in the fall, next winter.”
The loss ended a lackluster season for the Trevians who lost to out-of-state foe Culver Academy 17-5 and local rival Loyola 7-5.
