With a loaded conference this year, the Trevians are looking strong out of the gate coming off a 62-32 win over Julian High School. The Trevians now are sitting at 5-2 as they look ahead to some tough conference opponents.
New Trier played Julian in a city suburban shootout.
Senior Steven Cook shot the ball well and gave the Trevians solid minutes.
Senior Reid Berman and junior Jordan Thomas controlled the point for New Trier, handling the ball coming up the court.
The Trevians were also dominant on the boards where senior Aaron Angel controlled the glass.
It was a solid effort by the Trevians and the team was hitting on all cylinders.
The win should give New Trier some confidence as they head into a very important part of their season.
So far, the guard play for the Trevians has been very solid and continues to improve each week.
“Our guard play is very strong and deep,” coach Scott Fricke said. Another strength for the team is their team chemistry.
“We have a lot of guys who get along with each other,” Fricke said. These two aspects of New Trier’s game has carried them to early season success thus far.
New Trier has suffered some big losses from last year’s graduating seniors including David Bragiel, Austin Angel and Connor Boehm. Boehm and Angel are both playing in college at Dartmouth and UIC respectively.
“[Angel, Boehm and Bragiel] were a big loss for us,” said Fricke.
“Those kids were experienced players.” Fricke still likes how the team is dealing without these players.
“I like the way the kids are stepping up,” he said.
The Trevians have big shoes to fill, but early in the season, New Trier seems to be capable of completing the task.
The CSL South this year is very competitive and Fricke knows that.
“Our conference is very good; every team in our conference can play,” he said. “We can’t take games off.”
Evanston always is very good in the conference, and Maine South and Niles West look to be very strong this year as well.
New Trier knows that it will be a tall order to win the conference championship. But it is something that the Trevians hope to accomplish this year. They also hope to earn a trip to Peoria to compete at state.
Fricke recognizes that in order for the Trevians to win, they will have to play hard all season.
“We need to be a great rebounding team and limit our turnovers.”
Dominating the boards and limiting mistakes will be crucial in order for New Trier to be successful this season.
With a competitive conference, the Trevians know that winning the CSL south will be no easy task.
However, with the tools the team has, the team believes they will be able to compete and play tough with all of the teams in the conference.
