Badminton is off to a decent start this season. Through six games, they have compiled a 3-3 record, with two more games against Main West and Glenbrook North that occurred this week after press time.
Last weekend, the Trevians participated in Featherfest, a badminton tournament held at the Winnetka campus.
Senior Jill Lurie and junior Marion Lewis both came out of the tournament with individual championships, both in singles.
Their most recent game against Stevenson ended in a close 10-8 loss, but previously the Trevians came out with an 18-0 win against Maine East, their second shutout of the season.
Players that won both singles and doubles in the Waukegan game include senior Emily Rutherford (21-5 and 21-3 in singles), senior Cece Bishop (21-9 and 21-13 singles), junior Tristan Peters (21-3 and 21-1 in singles), and freshman Lexi Smolyar (21-6 and 21-12 in singles). Rutherford and Bishop scored 21-10 and 21-14 in doubles and Peters and Smolyar scored 21-16 and 21-11 in their doubles match.
Prior to their Maine East shutout, the team suffered an 11-4 loss against York, and beat Glenbrook South 13-5. Bishop and Rutherford won 15-21, 21-16, and 21-12 in their doubles match against GBS, and Peters and Smolyar won 18-21, 26-24, and 21-19 in their match.
The team started off their season with a 12-6 loss at Deerfield prior to their Waukegan shutout victory. Deerfield, being a senior-dominated team, carried the advantage for the game, though the Trevians are still in good company without the seniors who graduated last year.
Head coach Deborah Ofcky said that she’s most excited about working with the new players this season.
“The youth that we have is refreshing, they really want to learn, they’re very respectful, they work really hard, and that makes us look to a lot of things to come as we grow throughout the season,” she said.
The team finished off last year with a 5-1 win against Loyola in the sectional semifinals and a 4-2 loss against Maine West at the sectional finals, bringing their 2012 overall record to 31-6.
