Cummings with Tadelman after winning state

Senior Jack Cummings did not expect to earn a winning title in this year’s state wrestling championship, which made his win even more satisfying.

“I was definitely going in there as more of an underdog,” said Cummings. “But my coaches and teammates and I all thought that I had the capability to go in there and win.”

According to Cummings, head wrestling coach Marc Tadelman kept him motivated and supported him through the state tournament.

“I did my best to remind him how great a wrestler he was, and focus on his success in the past,” said Tadelman.

After winning state, Cummings got a surprising amount of attention on social media and at school.

“I’ve gotten a lot of congratulations and good jobs, which is something that I’m not really used to, especially with wrestling. It’s certainly not a sport that gets brought into the limelight,” said Cummings.

Cummings has contributed positively to his team according to wrestling Coach Marc Tadelman.

“He’s a captain and role model on and off the mat. A great scholar athlete,” said Tadelman.

Cummings said his teammates have helped him improve immensely throughout the season.

“We’ve been practicing together since the beginning of high school and I can’t understate how critical he’s been in helping me improve,” said Cummings.

Cummings also believes his teammates have helped him prepare for state by watching videos of them wrestling.

“Wilson Wright and Eli Polacek helped me break down film on my opponents leading up to my state matches,” said Cummings.

Cummings believes a large part of his success is attributed to the people around him.

“I had a huge level of support behind me with my teammates, coaching staff, and friends. It would have been impossible to do it without them.”

Tadelman, has been an influential figure during his wrestling career.

“He’s really taught me a lot and he’s been a great mentor and coach.”

Cummings is grateful to end his senior wrestling season on a high.

“It’s a good feeling to get recognition like that, and I’m happy about it,” said Cummings.
