Boys Golf
New Trier High School boys golf ended with another successful season in the books. The team had a great regular season, winning four different invites and the CSL Championship. Junior Liam Kelly also became the 3A Individual State Champion with an amazing two-under-par 70 at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, Northbrook, Illinois. The Trevs had solid playoff performances placing top five in both regionals and sectionals, awarding them another appearance in the State Championship. Even with a second-day comeback at The Den at Fox Creek, the team fell just one stroke short of Hinsdale Central High School and Evanston Township High School, who won the gold and silver medals, respectively. But, aside from the team, Kelly was sent into a playoff hole against Junior Kieran Lowe from Evanston to win the Individual Championship. After a three-putt from Lowe, Kelly drained his par putt and became the 3A individual state champion. Junior Logan Keeter also placed fifth individually in the State Tournament.
Girls Golf
New Trier High School girls golf, like the boys golf team, finished another good season after junior Grace Leber placed eighth individually in the State Championship in October. She shot a plus-two 74 on the second day, completing an amazing season for the junior. She also won 2A Individual Regional Championship, shooting a 2-under-par 70 at Glenview Park Golf Club. During sectionals, Leber shot a 3-under 69, which sent her downstate. The team as a whole finished second in the conference and won multiple matches, including ones against Prospect High School and St. Viator High School, during a successful regular season.
Field Hockey
After a tragic loss in the IHSFHA State Championship last year, the New Trier High School field hockey team had big sights set on their 2024 season. The Trevs went undefeated in the state, and their only loss coming from West Essex High High School (New Jersey), which was during a national tournament. The Trevs didn’t stop and flew through the playoffs, winning the sectional championship in a shutout versus Oak Park and River Forest High School. The team then played Lake Forest High School, whom they lost last season to, in the State Championship. After going down 0-1 early, the Trevs returned, winning 3-1 to become State Champions. At the end of the season, MaxPreps ranked New Trier field hockey as the fifth best team in the country. The team won a plethora of awards including Senior Beatrice Ottsen winning Illinois Defensive Player of the Year and Senior Kennedy Glinn winning Illinois Goalkeeper award. Ottsen, Glinn, and Julia Soriano are all signed to play collegiate field hockey at the University of Michigan, Bates College, and Northwestern University, respectively.
Girls Tennis
In October, New Trier High School girls tennis won another 2A State Championship, becoming back-to-back State Champions. The Trevs rolled through the regular season going undefeated, sweeping multiple schools like Highland Park High School, Glenbrook North High School, Maine South High School, Evanston Township High School, and Stevenson High School. The Trevs kept the momentum into the playoffs, winning Conference and Sectional Championships. The team didn’t slow down, winning back-to-back 2A State Championships. Senior Keri Rothenberg and junior Ariane Lesterhuis clinched first place in doubles, and freshman Ingrid Fiedler took sixth place in singles. Rothenberg and another senior, Senior Anya Mookencherry, both signed to play collegiate tennis at Davidson College and Lake Forest College, respectively.
Football
New Trier High School football had another disappointing season. Going 2-7, the Trevs couldn’t figure out much this season. Two solid wins against Glenbrook North High School and Yorkville High School helped out while the rest of the games tended to end in blowouts. For example, the week three loss against Prospect High School ended in a 43-0 shutout. A bright spot in the gloomy season was senior punter Niki Dugandzic committing to Northwestern University after another stellar season. Dugandzic then was chosen to play in the All-American Bowl, representing the Trevs among the best high school players in the nation. Three-year quarterback senior Patrick Henegan also signed on to play division three football at Denison University in Ohio. The Trevs look to next year to hopefully improve on their recent struggles.
Girls Volleyball
On Nov. 7, Girls Volleyball upset Loyola Academy in stunning fashion. After losing in the regular season to them, the Trevs dominated in a two-set victory to become sectional champions. The Trevs then lost in the elite eight of the state tournament to the incumbent champs Benet Academy. Aside from playoffs, girls volleyball had a successful season. They finished second in the conference, going 8-2 in conference play and 27-7 in the regular season. Four of the seniors signed on to play collegiate volleyball: Elizabeth Hall (College of the Holy Cross), Lauren Cortina (University of California Los Angeles), Katherine McGregor (Georgetown University), and Emma McHatten (Presbyterian College). Sonja Keneally also committed to play lacrosse at Tufts University.
Girls Flag Football
In their second year of existence, girls flag football had another great season. The regular season was up and down, with the Trevs going 10-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play. But, things picked up come playoff time. After two wins against Resurrection High School and Roosevelt High School, the Trevs became Sectional Champions. The Trevs then were shut out by Taft High School in the state semifinals 12-0. Junior Ilana Styles was placed on the Honorable Mention All-State Team while four other players (in addition to Styles), senior Tala Tabahi, junior Lyla Andelin, and sophomore Victoria Wainscott were placed on the All-Conference Team. The Trevs look to continue the success and spirit of the new program next year.
Boys XC
Boys cross country ended a stellar season in November, where the team took sixth in the State Championship. The team placed top five in multiple meets throughout the season and also won the CSL Championship. Before heading to state, the Trevs also took home a Sectional Championship a week prior. But one runner on the team shattered the competition: senior Ben Crane. Crane placed first individually in multiple invites during the season, then followed it up with winning individual Regional and Sectional champions. During his sectional victory, he broke the school record with a time of 14:14.1. But, he wasn’t finished yet. Crane went into the State Championship and shattered the IHSA Class 3A record with a time of 14:03.4, becoming the individual state champion. On Nov. 18, the team finished No. 13 in the NXR Midwest Race. Crane, finishing as the fastest runner from Illinois, became the first New Trier boys cross country runner to qualify for the Nike Cross Country Nationals in Portland, Oregon.
Girls XC
Girls cross country ended their season with runner Senior Josie Cahill, a Santa Clara University commit, finishing twelfth at the State Championship in Detweiller Park on Nov. 9. Aside from that, six other runners qualified for the state championship after the team finished fifth at sectionals on Nov. 2. Before that, they placed third at regionals and second in conference. The regular season had similar success with the Trevs winning the Libertyville High School on Sept. 21 meet and also placing top five in a few others.Â
Boys Soccer
After a historic season last year, where the team was ranked No. 3 in the entire country and won the 3A State Championship, the Trevs weren’t able to follow up on their success. They had an up and down regular season which finished with a loss against Evanston Township High School in the iconic Hydrant Game. The Trevs got to the postseason and started hot with a win against Loyola Academy, but fell to Maine South High School in the Regional Finals. The Trevs look toward next season to return to their prior glory. The Jijon brothers, seniors Matteo and Marco, both committed to Beloit College to continue their soccer careers.
Girls Swim and Dive
Girls swim and dive continued its recent success with the 2024 season. During the regular season, the Trevs went from invite to invite, winning multiple and placing top five in more than a few. The Trevs came into the 46th annual Trevian Relays on Oct. 10 and wiped the floor, beating state champion contending teams like Stevenson High School. The Trevs continued into the postseason where they won Conference and Sectionals, and easily qualified for state. New Trier, however, couldn’t finish out, and placed second in the State Championship. Senior Tierney Lenahan won the 100m backstroke and the team of Lenahan, Senior Riley Mcneal, Senior Zara Bolton, and Senior Maeve O’Donnell won the 200-yard Medley Relay. Six Trevs signed on to swim on the collegiate level, including, Lenahan (Duke University), Bolton (Rice University), Marin Shimkus (Tulane University), Olivia Safarikova (University of Pennsylvania), Elyse Newlands (Claremont McKenna University), O’Donnell (New York University), and Rosie Woodman (Villanova University).
