New Trier Dance Team poses elatedly after qualifying for state at the IHSA state qualifier competition following their close qualification last year

From energy filled football games to intense basketball games, New Trier Dance Team’s performances never fail to wow the crowd. This year for the first time in its history, the team qualified for the IHSA state finals.

This year’s team competed on Jan. 21 at the Warren Sectional, placing 6th with a  score of 81.53 to claim their spot in the IHSA state finals.

The team’s excitement was through the roof as they traveled down to Bloomington, IL on Jan. 27.

“It was very cool and inspiring to see the top teams in Illinois and be around the best dancers in the state. We were also super happy to be the first in New Trier history,” said Senior Dancer, Ava Muller.

At last year’s Deerfield Sectional, the team finished one place and two points (73.53) away from state qualification.

The dance team’s presence is one that encapsulates the student’s spirit. One of the most important aspects of the team is the bond between the members. Senior Ava Muller notes that this years team was definitely the closest team she’s been a part of. She highlights the importance of this because it allowed the team to work together to choreograph and perform some of the best dances in the program’s history. The season began in mid august, with tryouts for the fall team.

“Trying out was definitely the most stressful part. There was a lot of people and it was overwhelming,” says Muller.

However, once the team was formed, the energy was flowing.

“Performing at football games was always so much fun. Especially the first one of my senior year because the entire New Trier student body was there. The energy was great,” said Muller.

Although football season came to a close in early November, the team’s spirit carried onto the court for the Basketball season. Fans appreciate the team’s presence and say they add spirit and excitement to the games.

“I always look forward to watching NTDT perform at any sporting event,” notes Senior fan, Emily Malueg.

Following the 2022-2023 season, the team hopes to continue in the same direction. Junior Vivian Fletcher, who has been a part of the program since her freshman year, says she is happy with the way this season turned out. She has high expectations for the team in the future.

“We are also getting a new choreographer next year, so the whole team is excited to try to make it to state for the second time,” said Fletcher.
