Tragedy strikes Newtown, CT

Funerals for the 26 victims continue after last Friday’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. According to the New York Times, Connecticut State Police confirm the killer is 20-year-old Adam Lanza. After killing his mother, Lanza went on to the school where he murdered 20 first-graders and six adults. After that, Lanza killed himself.

Lanza’s motives for the murders are still under investigation, but Connecticut State Police said that he did not have any affiliation with Sandy Hook Elementary School, which runs counter to reports that he once attended the school, or that his mother taught at the school.

Former classmates of Lanza said he had a developmental disorder, but this has not been confirmed yet.

Police also reported that Lanza did not use all of the firepower he brought to the school and hundreds of unfired bullets remained before he took his own life. Lanza’s mother owned, acquired and registered all of the guns her son used in the massacre.

New Trier Superintendent Linda Yonke emailed parents last Friday assuring the school has top-notch security and counseling for students who need it. She also expressed grief and concern for the tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with all of the families affected by this tragedy as well as with the entire community of Newtown.”
