NT employee accused, released on $1,000 bail

New Trier transportation director Timothy Barfield was arrested on Oct. 11, 2013 for stealing large sums of money, according to CBS Chicago.

Barfield allegedly stole $2,600 from the school district and directly from parents. CBS Chicago claims that he was able to manipulate parents to give him money by using his authority to ensure that their money was in good hands.

Also, according to CBS Chicago, as many as six parents paid Barfield directly for bus services through checks made out directly to him. New Trier was not aware of any of these payments.

Additionally, the Pioneer Press states that Barfield has been accused of chartering New Trier buses to wedding parties and billing the district for the expenses.

CBS Chicago reported that on Sept. 25 a parent called New Trier asking for the refund for her bus transportation check. However, there was no record of the transaction in the system.

School officials soon met with the police to discuss the missing transaction. It was not until a parent stated that they had made the payment directly to Barfield that he became the person of interest.

Barfield has been charged for theft over $500, a class three felony, for which the maximum jail time is five years. He has been released on a $1,000 bail on Oct. 12, according to the Pioneer Press. Barfield’s court date was on Oct. 17 at the Cook County Court in Skokie, Illinois. No further information has been released on the matter

The New Trier administration refused to comment when asked about Barfield.
